MOTW: Stanton Warriors
Mar 2012 07

This mix is a couple of weeks old but its a great sample of what the duo known as the Stanton Warriors can do. Also available as a download, this mix is one that you should be sure to snatch. The track below is a MOTW for the online version of Mixmag (the dance and club culture magazine) which is a series that they do every week… obviously. Some of the weekly mixes are shit (read most) but sometimes the mix just smashes it, this is one of those times.

Benga – “I Will Never Change”
Mar 2012 13

This here is the newest single from Benga ahead of his forthcoming album Chapter 2 which is slated for release on Columbia Records this August. The last few tracks that have been released by Benga have been absolutely fantastic as always and really show that he has been staying true to his roots, as the title of this song suggests. I for one love the piano’s and low key bass lines, not too aggressive as has been the trend with a lot of new dubstep – chilled.

U-TURN & 8OYC3Y – “I’m no hero”
Mar 2012 15

Below this track is the PR release for a duo from the UK that will explain a little bit of their background, I was going to do it myself but it felt like I was just regurgitating. The track featured here is their entry to the Outlook Festival 2012 producer competition, featuring some melodic, down-tempo dubstep. With a track like this you can expect to hear more from these guys in the future. Please do them a favour and give it a listen, you will not regret it!

Imagine being part of the team behind what could well be the largest commercial production ever….. The year is 2010 and a sound engineer named U-TURN a.k.a Stephen Perry suddenly finds himself working at Grand Central sound studios (London) amongst the company of sound designer Raja Sehgal who is on the sharp end of a hefty three minute long advert which will be aired simultaneously in 32 countries…..The advert in question is Nike’s write the future world cup commercial & it’s just another day at the office for Stephen. Having spent the early part of his career studying at the Alchemea College of audio engineering (London) he suddenly finds himself learning from the best in the business. Whilst his roots lie in a love of Drum&bass he often finds himself producing music of any genre alongside good friend & his co-label owner 8OYC3Y a.k.a Matthew Boyce, The pair first met after living less than a stone’s throw from each other & would often be seen hauling a record bag full of vinyl which to sample from between each other houses, Days turned to nights & nights turned to days as the pair sifted thru the tons of records that had now accumulated at Perry’s home studio, …it’s getting late on a Sunday night as Boycey switches on the studio’s Akai mpc sampler & instructs Perry to route the device thru the soundcard & out thru the weighty KRK v8 monitors which take pride of place in the studio….  As soon as Boycey relays the sound to Perry it catches the engineers attention, What the pair don’t yet know is that the sound in question would not only go on to grab the attention of local singer/songwriter “Farli” but also the ears of listeners for BBC Kent & Medway’s kmfm. The track produced that night was called “Truly Loved” & set the mark for what was to become the pair’s first track aired on national radio. Following the success of “Truly Loved” the pair now found themselves producing a track entitled “Broken Home” for influential U.K singer/songwriter “No lay” … The foundation for their career in music production started when the pair each purchased turntables & learnt the tricks of the trade spinning records at local house parties, Boycey learnt his trade playing on pirate radio alongside his long time friend Jim Cadman, a partnership which in 2006 saw the two friends playing a weekly Friday night slot on Medway’s Urban heights radio headlined by Dubstep Emcee & ChoiceFM Dj Rod Azlan.  Boycey’s introduction to Rod Azlan would prove to be invaluable & in 2007 Perry & Boyce setup “Me5 Records” a label which became a platform for the pair to release their music from. By now the pair of producers had gained local support following the release of “Truly Loved” in 2008 & by 2010 once again found themselves working the night shift at Perry’s home studio, The track that ensued was I’m no hero a dubstep number with a mix distorted sub-bass, jittering rhythms & euphoric electronica, shortly after the recording Boycey was standing in the departure lounge of London’s Luton airport when by chance he met Dubstep heavyweight & one third of Magnetic ManBENGA”  … the track was now set for bigger things! ….. January 2012 saw U-Turn & 8OYC3Y a.k.a  Stephen Perry / Matthew Boyce shortlisted by “FOO Magazine” as the next big act to come out of the U.K, the decision was put to the public vote with a view to the chosen winner receiving a £2000 music video  shoot from “clockwise media” …….. The pair came third in the vote with “Vision overground” taking the prize with their track “lights out” however the pair were undeterred & as there “Me5 records” slogan suggests it was “music in motion” for the pair & business as usual.

A good mate of mine just shared these guys with me under the advice that these guys will be massive so I did my due diligence and fucking hell, he might be onto something. Hybrid Minds are two mates from the UK on the legendary audio porn record label, home to the likes of Dirtyphonics, Camo & Krooked, Shimon etc. The mix below is stellar, very much worth a listen if you are into that liquid funk. Happy St. Patties day bitches.

Daft Punk – Aerodynamic (Specimen A & James D’ley Re-fix)
Mar 2012 20

Here at Viking Says we have been supporting Specimen A for quite some time and I am pleased to say that this week he will be releasing part II to this track. I don’t know in particular what it is he is releasing but this remix of Daft Punk is pretty fantastic, as are most things coming from Funkatech records. Check back later this week for the next installment. Carrots
