I only just recently was pointed in the direction of this DJ and I’m glad I was shown him! this is a great mix and very much worth getting it if you can. The reason I am showing you this (not that i really need one) is because Blame is coming to Toronto… hell yeah.

I know its been a few days since the show but i have been busy haha. First off, it was a great show. They played all of their massive tunes and a couple of wonderful surprises. The sound was a little disappointing but from what I know Circa just got a newish sound system and they needed to work some kinks out of it. A “source” told me that the sound could have been fixed in a couple of minutes but that would have meant stopping the jams… and we all know what happens then (hint: no music = fail). I was a little surprised that only half of Chase and Status were there, specifically the Chase half haha but I don’t think it really matters much for this kind of show. I was pleased to hear a little bit of dubstep thrown into the mix but it wasn’t on for long enough haha. I also enjoyed the tracks from Rusko, Noisia, TC, Caspa etc.

A lot of people hate on MC’s at dnb shows but to be honest they do a heck of a job working up the crowd and I don’t care what anyone else says. Much respect to the MC’s (please stop with the “smack it” though!)

At the very end of the set Chase dropped a siiiiick surprise. If you were there then you know what I am talking about and if not then take a little peep here. It isnt the best quality but you get the idea. Also i can see myself lulz.

All in all it was a ridiculous night and I very much enjoyed Lush, Chase & Status and Marcus Visionary. Looking forward to seeing them again.

One Last Video here but it isnt from the same show…

p.s. circa had the most intense searches before a show that i have ever been too haha

Biiiiig news for all you dubstep fans out there. Two of the founders of the genre are coming to Toronto this weekend!

14-JUN-09 SKREAM + BENGA @ WRONGBAR 19+ $18.50

Skream was one of dubsteps first and most prominent producers. He began producing music at the age of 15 (using fruity loops) and claims to have roughly 1400 songs in varying stages of development!

Benga is a dubstep producer from Croydon, South London, and is part of the Tempa and Big Apple Records label. He has been described as an important name in the development of the dubstep style for his fusion of the already existing South London dubstep sound with the newer East London born grime sound, and was also one of the first dubstep producers when the style was emerging in the early 2000s (thanks wiki)

This morning I woke up to hear of the passing of Martin Streek. He had been a DJ for the local Toronto radio station (102.1 the edge) until he was let go in may of this year. Martin had been with the edge for almost 20 years and was the last of “the spirit of radio” crew (as far as i am aware?). He was probably most well known for his live-to-air broadcasts from different clubs and bars across the GTA and also for the Thursday 30 and new rock ground breakers.

you will be missed…

On Thursday July 9th after a two year wait Toronto was graced once again with the bombastic sounds of Beirut. The openers for the night were the psych-rock duo The Dodos who played about a 45min set showcasing some of their more well known tunes including this one here.

As the venue started to fill and the tension start to rise the main act finally hit the stage and bombarded the crowd with all of their favorite tracks. This was the first time that Zach Condon had been back to Toronto since October 2007 and after the scare last year (Zach took a break and canceled all tours for almost a year) it almost seemed like they would never come back again. If you do not know much about this group then read on :P

Zach Condon was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico on February 13, 1986. He was brought up in Virginia before moving back to New Mexico. Condon attended Santa Fe High School, where he was a student until he dropped out at the age of 16. He later enrolled in community college, which he attended for a short period before traveling to Europe for four months with his brother Ryan at the age of 17. He stayed most of this time in Paris where he became aware of Balkan folk music, popular with Parisian students. He then lived three years with local gypsies where he studied music and became heavily influenced by their instruments. This discovery and Condon’s subsequent exploration of world music proved to be instrumental in the development of Beirut’s sound. On his return from Europe, Condon enrolled at the University of New Mexico, where he studied Portuguese and Photography. Condon recorded the bulk of the material used for Gulag Orkestar by himself in his bedroom, going into the studio to finish the album with the assistance of Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel, A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw), who became early members of the band Beirut.

I noticed the last time that I saw them was that they encourage the fans to bring cameras and recording equipment to the shows. Very cool idea! If only I had remembered this time haha. Anyways, for the record Beirut puts on one of the best live shows that I have seen. You wont ever understand unless you go to see them for yourself.

Wow what a night last night, serious lineup for/with Benga at the Modclub. One of the DJ’s that really blew me away last night was a DJ by the name of Mark Instinct. Ive been trying to find out more about him but all I really know is that he is from Calgary (yay for homegrown talent!). Anyways, he is playing a show tonight in Oakville (of all places) @ Arnolds (click for map). If you live in the area then I highly recommend checking it out. Im assuming that the set will start at 10pm

See you there
